The Ripple Effect: Learn more about the National City Spigot Project
ARTS @ Work announces our newest paid internship opportunity, "Ripple Effect" - National City Spigot Project! In partnership with the City of National City and the Sweetwater Authority, ARTS will collaborate with Artist and Exile, Inc. to create a public art piece honoring and celebrating the Sweetwater Spigot, a free water source for National City residents. ARTS Youth will participate in this paid internship, contributing to the project's co-design, fabrication, and installation.
Some of you may remember when the Spigot was first established on Diversion Street. It has since relocated to Fourth Street, but it continues to offer free access to clean water for everyone! This free water station is located on East Fourth Avenue, near the Interstate 805 freeway, and sources its water from a well just a few hundred yards away. The Sweetwater Authority water district has been maintaining these wells since 1977, when the district was established. In partnership with the City of National City, the district proudly oversees this free water station to ensure everyone has access to fresh water!

City plans for the location of the National City water Spigot
ARTS @ Work Interns will work alongside professional fabricators to co-design and create a functional and artistic public installation at the National City Spigot site. This project focuses on creative placemaking and creating works of art for the enjoyment of the community that also serve a significant purpose. It highlights the importance of water—specifically, the Sweetwater Spigot—as a vital community water source.
This project is in the recruitment phase. We are inviting youth ages 13-19 who are currently or have been enrolled in a program with ARTS in the last year to apply to be part of the team. For more information, reach out to our program coordinator, Anna Mia Ruiz.
