Branching Out with our Community ARTS Program!

Last November we shared with you the incredible knitting and crochet guest workshops that were part of our partnership with the National City Community Services Department which initiated an intergenerational art project called "Stitching Generations/Tejiendo Generaciones." This project brought together Community ARTS youth and the FABs (Fifty and Better) from the Kimball Senior Center to collaborate on a temporary "yarn bombing" installation outside the ARTS Center.

Be sure to check out our last blog post to learn more about these Community ARTS guest workshops!

In December we hosted the culimnating project of the series where our youth and the FABs welcomed the community to join us in learning how to crochet while creating a fun, colorful public art installation which can still be seen on the big tree outside the ARTS Center's main entrance!

This fun event brought together a wonderful mix of community members from our FABs and their friends, all excited to show off their lovely stitching skills! The youth in our programs had a great time sharing the lessons they’ve learned and inspiring everyone with their creativity. We also had passionate needleworkers join us for the occasion, as well as friendly passersby who wandered by the arts center and couldn’t resist coming in to see what was happening. And we were especially excited to welcome the talented contestants from the Miss National City pageant, adding a little extra sparkle to our gathering!

What an amazing event! It really showcased how valuable intergenerational learning is, along with sharing our stories and skills, and having a good laugh together. We’re super excited to team up with the National City Community Service Department again in the future to create even more wonderful events like this one!

Check out our Community ARTS program to learn how you can get involved in our open community events and workshops. Registration is currently open for our Spring 2025 session for all youth ages 12 to 18!
